Mentor Toolkit
Take advantage of the resources below to help lighten the mentoring load and reach out to the Office of Undergraduate Research with any mentoring questions.
Mentor Support
In addition to the resources below, be sure to check out our Recruit/Celebrate Students page to find and later celebrate your next mentee. And visit our Engagement Opportunities to learn how you make a bigger impact on campus even by sharing a single slide.
- Use our sample Mentor-Mentee Compact for Undergraduate Research to start a conversation with your mentee about your expectations for them. Making sure your expectations are aligned (and revisiting them over time) will help you both to have a successful experience.
- Use our Anatomy of a Research Notebook document to start a conversation with your mentee on how they should manage the data they collect and the additional information they learn during their research experience.
- Use our Core Competency resources to have regular conversations with your mentee about the key things they need to learn to be a well-rounded researcher and successful in any career. These can help you track their progress, makes plans to grow their skills further, and come in handy when writing letters of recommendation later.
- Core Competencies Worksheet (pdf)
- Use our Conflict Resolution and Concern Escalation Protocol to help navigate any conflicts or concerns that may arise during your mentoring experience. The Office of Undergraduate Research and many other units on campus are here to support both you and your mentee.
