Engagement Opportunities

Find out how to get involved in supporting undergraduate researchers beyond direct mentoring.

Spread the Word

Share our newsletters, social media posts, electronic bulletins, and information about our events, programs, and resources with students. As you have research-related opportunities, events, etc., let us help you spread the word by adding them to our marketing.

“Doing undergraduate research at NC State has helped me use what I learned in class to explore real-world problems and ideas. It has also helped me build my skills and feel more confident as a researcher.”

Economics

The Office of Undergraduate Research’s weekly newsletter is open to the NC State community and shares information on all things related to undergraduate research. Your announcements can be for any field of interest within research, and do not need to be all-encompassing.

Instructors are also invited to place our single, “Learning About Undergraduate Research” slide into their presentations/course materials to give their students a good starting point.

Be Our Guest

Visit student presentations at our annual symposia and research slams and talk with them about their research. Giving students a chance to share their hard work and answer questions about their projects is critical for developing their presentation and communication skills. You may just find your next intern, Masters or Ph.D. student, or new hire!

Guests are welcome to join us at any of our three annual symposia: Fall Sidewalk Symposium, Spring Symposium, and Summer Symposium. You are also encouraged to attend our Research Slams held every fall and spring.

Share Your Insights

“I learned a great deal at this event, but something that stood out to me the most was how funding works for graduate students…. Another thing that I learned from this event is the importance of meeting with graduate students in the department that I want to join.”

Sustainable Materials and Technology & Food Science

We are always looking for panel participants from a wide range of disciplines and career paths to answer student questions and to share their experiences and guidance. These panels are scheduled as part of our professional development workshops offered throughout the year and we can accommodate your schedule if you are interested in participating.

Serve as a Reviewer

We rely on faculty and other field experts to review students’ applications to our Project Supply Grants. Because these grants are supposed to written for a broad audience, field-specific expertise is not necessary.

Reviewers are asked to serve for one full year (three application cycles) with the number of applications each round depending on the total number submitted and the number of available reviewers. We do our best to keep this service to only a few hours of your time or less.

“While participating in the PSG Grant program, I learned to strengthen my scientific writing and communication skills…. This experience also taught me hands-on applications of various topics I learned in my coursework.”

Present a Workshop

Students enjoying a guest presenter's talk.

We enjoy partnering with colleagues across the campus and from the community who want to share their expertise with students in the form of a professional development workshop. We offer workshops for students throughout the year and welcome a wide-range of topics that will help students round out their educational experience and take their skills to the next level.

If you would like more information on any of these engagement opportunities, please email the office at undergraduate-research@ncsu.edu.
