Overview
Funding programs offered by the Office of Undergraduate Research are just some of the financial resources available to student researchers. Check out the compiled resources below for additional support. Students of any major and of any background (including international and undocumented students) can find something available to them. We also recommend utilizing the services of the University Fellowships Office to help craft successful applications.
Additional Campus Funding
- College and Departmental Opportunities
- Many colleges and departments across the campus offer research-related funding to their students. In addition to the list below, students should check with their department to learn more about opportunities available to them.
- College of Agriculture and Life Sciences’ Research Pack Abroad Program
- College of Natural Resources’ Terry Student Assistance and Enrichment Fund
- College of Engineering’s Engineer Your Experience Program
- Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering’s Departmental Research Experience for Undergraduates
- Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering’s Undergraduate Research Scholars Program
- Many colleges and departments across the campus offer research-related funding to their students. In addition to the list below, students should check with their department to learn more about opportunities available to them.
- Summer Research Programs
- The Office of Undergraduate Research lists summer research programs based at NC State and provides additional programming support for them. These opportunities provide student participants with funding, networking opportunities, professional development, and research experience.
- Research Abroad Scholarships
- Students interested in traveling away/abroad to conduct research should check out the Study Abroad Office’s NC State Scholarships and Arcadia Abroad’s Scholarships and Funding.
- The Center for Geospatial Analytics’ Interdisciplinary Geospatial Research Opportunities Undergraduate Program (I-GROUP)
- The Interdisciplinary Geospatial Research Opportunities Undergraduate Program (I-GROUP) is open to students in any major who want to explore geospatial questions through an interdisciplinary lens.
- Comparative Medicine Institute’s Undergraduate Research (U-TEAM) Fellowship
- The Undergraduate Research (U-TEAM) Fellowship in Comparative Biomedical Research provides interdisciplinary research training to research focused students from a breadth of backgrounds who have a strong interest in pursuing a Ph.D. in the Biomedical field.
- Sustainability Fund
- The NC State Sustainability Fund offers grants to current students, faculty and staff who propose high-impact experiences (e.g. research) for students while advancing sustainability at NC State.
External Funding
- George Barthalmus Undergraduate Research Award
- Available to sophomores (second year students) in North Carolina.
- Named in honor of Dr. George T. Barthalmus, the first director of NC State’s Office of Undergraduate Research and a key creator of the State of North Carolina Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium.
- Available to sophomores (second year students) in North Carolina.

- Council on Undergraduate Research Travel Awards-NC State students are eligible to apply through the Office of Undergraduate Research’s Enhanced Institutional Membership
