Identifying Research Internships
Internships that are also research experience don’t tend call themselves research experiences. Instead, students must piece this together from the provide job description. When reviewing a job description, check for the following characteristics:
- Intern will be using a systematic approach to collect information.
- Intern will be analyzing the collected data in some way and using higher level critical thinking.
- At the end of the internship, there be something new resulting from the work—a new understanding/knowledge or a new product.
Sometimes figuring out if an internship qualifies as a research experience can be difficult, especially for students with little to no experience in research, or if the internship in question is close but needs some amending to become a true research experience. The Office of Undergraduate Research is available to assist in the process by reviewing the job description in question and discussing options with the student. You can e-mail undergraduate-research@ncsu.edu to schedule a meeting.
