Dr. Janet Goins

Bio

Dr. Goins joined the Office of Undergraduate Research in March 2023. Previously, they were Associate Director of UCLA’s Undergraduate Research Center-Sciences serving as director for six undergraduate research programs and managing campus-wide initiatives and resource development for all majors and research interests. At UCLA they also worked closely with partners in UCLA’s Undergraduate Research Center-Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. Shortly before coming to NC State, Dr. Goins worked at Washington University in St. Louis, creating new programs and resources to support undergraduate researchers in Biology and teaching Entering Mentoring for mentors across the campus. Their earlier work as Director of Educational Outreach for the NSF-funded, interdisciplinary Water Partnerships for Research and Education (PIRE) program in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of California, Irvine is what started them down the career path of supporting undergraduate researchers.

In addition to their recent positions, Dr. Goins was a Science Communication and Strategic Marketing Fellow for the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) in Washington, D.C. working on initiatives for public engagement with science, including the annual ASM Agar Art contest. They also earned an ASM-Burroughs Wellcome Fund Science Teaching Fellowship, and are certified by the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER) to facilitate both Entering Research and Entering Mentoring curricula. Prior to focusing their career on making research more accessible to students and the public, Dr. Goins earned a B.Sc. and Ph.D. (both in Microbiology) from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, conducting environmental microbiology research; completed a postdoc at the Nebraska Center for Virology, conducting biomedical research; and completed a second postdoc at UC, Irvine conducting applied microbiology and environmental engineering. They are delighted to bring their diverse experiences to NC State and to be a part of the pack!
