These workshops are open to all students, regardless of major, research interest, or prior/current research experience.

We invite you to develop your skills further, and to round out your educational and research experience at NC State by joining us and our colleagues at the following workshops. For students currently funded by the OUR, the professional development workshops are pre-approved for meeting your professional development activity requirement.
Many of these workshops are located in one of the East Learning Labs, or the South Learning Lab in D.H. Hill Jr. Library (not far from the Office of Undergraduate Research). Please see the linked maps to help find the rooms.

- Arcadia Abroad STEM Summer Research Info Session: January 8, 2025 4:00-5:00 P.M. DH Hill East Learning Lab A
- Are you a STEM student looking to gain hands-on research experience abroad this summer? Join us for an info session to learn about exciting opportunities with Arcadia Abroad! Choose from a range of academic research opportunities across five countries—England, Ireland, Scotland, Spain, and Italy—in a variety of STEM fields.
- PreHealth Research and Application Tips: January 16, 2025 2:00-3:00 P.M. DH Hill Multimedia Seminar Center, East Wing Room 2131
- Come learn the best ways to utilize undergraduate research experiences for preparation to enter the next steps of your health career path. We’ll discuss key things to keep in mind as you look for opportunities, how to get the most out of your experiences, and how to best market yourself in future applications.

- Deadlines for summer research programs are just around the corner. Learn how to find, select, and apply to these opportunities.
- Translating Jargon and Assembling Your Elevator Pitch: January 30, 2025 10:00-11:00 A.M. DH Hill East Learning Lab A
- While you understand your research, a general audience may not. In this workshop, we will focus on different methods to translate technical jargon so that others can understand your research, particularly when presenting to a varied group at events like the Research and Creativity Symposium. Additionally, we will discuss ways to assemble your research into a short elevator pitch so that you can hook your listener and keep them interested.
- Student Benefits of Professional Organizations: February 10, 2025 3:00-4:00 P.M. DH Hill East Learning Lab A
- Professional organizations exist to support research in all fields and most have resources designed for students. These can include: scholarships, career advice, travel awards for conferences, and more. We’ll discuss how to find and best utilize the resources that are right for you and your career path.
- Crafting a Literature Review: February 21, 2025 2:00-3:00 P.M. DH Hill East Learning Lab A
- Examining previous scholarship can be exhilarating as a researcher but daunting as a writer telling the scholarly story. However, in order to sound credible to your reader, the tracing of past work is important. In this workshop, we will examine how to write a literature review that successfully addresses your topic and synthesizes the research you have discovered. Topics will include summarizing versus synthesizing, parts of a literature review, metadiscourse, and lending your voice to your scholarly story.
- Your Rights as a Researcher and Student: March 28, 2025 3:00-4:00 P.M. DH Hill East Learning Lab B
- Research and Entrepreneurship: April 1, 2025 1:00-2:00 P.M. DH Hill East Learning Lab A
- Research and entrepreneurship go hand in hand. Entrepreneurs utilize research in every step of the process from idea development to launch and then growing and scaling. We’ll be discussing what research in entrepreneurship looks like and also how an entrepreneurial mindset can be applied to your research.

The OUR is here to help you prepare your research oral and poster presentations! Join us as you are getting ready to present at one of the many opportunities on- and off-campus for students to showcase their hard work. Project Supply Grant Help Sessions
These sessions provide key information on applying for Project Supply Grant funding. Applicants must attend one full help session prior to submitted their first applications. Once this requirement is met, applicants may continue to submit applications in the future without attending additional help sessions.
