2017 Dates of Summer REU Program Activities

May 30 – August 3, 2017

NC State University students working on independent research projects may attend the events in addition to students in the summer REU Programs!

Events with dates and times are confirmed, events missing the date and time are in the process of being confirmed so please check back.

Safety Orientation, Ken Kretchman, Talley – Piedmont Mountains Ballroom

  • Basic safety information for students engaged in research and living on the campus.  Specific safety information for their research and facility to be provided by mentors.

Wed. May 31

Welcome Reception for Students, Mentors, and Administrators, Talley – Piedmont Mountains Ballroom

  • All students, mentors, and administrators of programs invited. Introduction of programs. Mixer for students to meet each other across programs.
  • Light Refreshments

Symposium Registration Info and Poster Training Seminar – George Hess – Witherspoon 126

  • Students learn how to construct a good poster and how to register for the symposium and submit abstracts
  • Registration site for summer symposium opens that day or the next

Research Ethics, David Resnik, JC, PhD, Bioethicist and IRB Chair, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, NIH  – TBD

This is a general content area session to cover misconduct (falsification, fabrication, plagiarism), data management, authorship, and mentorship.

  • Programs will need follow-up with case studies in content areas or review other options for small group case study discussions.

Fri. July 7 –

4:30-7pm

BBQ Break! (Students and Mentors) – Lee Park (Near Lee Residence Hall)

This will be a casual get together to relax, eat and enjoy a summer evening. Drop by anytime, food will be served at 4:30pm and will be there until it’s gone. Horseshoes, frisbee and corn hole will be available. INVITE will be sent, RSVP REQUIRED!

Wed July 19, NOON Deadline for student registration and abstract submission for Summer Symposium – Mentors MUST approve the abstract in order for student to present and be included in abstract book.

NC State Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium – Talley Student Center

  • Student Check In 9:45am -10:30am of all posters/presenters
  • Two sessions  (Odd 10:45-12:15p and Even 1:15-2:45p Posters ONLY),
  • Light Fare 12-1pm, Beverages and Snacks 10-3p
