Summer Only

The Office of Undergraduate Research through the Division of Academic & Student Affairs (DASA) will provide undergraduate research and scholarship awards ranging in amounts up to $2,000* to undergraduate students for research projects for the Summer semesters. These awards are open to all disciplines for students pursuing undergraduate research, scholarship and creative activities. The number of awards given is determined by amount of funding available at the time the selection process occurs. Proposals are reviewed by faculty/post-docs within the home college of the mentor.

Requirements and Restrictions:

  • Students wishing to apply for the NC State Undergraduate Research Awards should:
    1. Have a mentor identified for the research,
    2. Prepare a research proposal,
    3. Complete a budget of expenses related to the research, as part of the online submission. SAMPLE-Budget

  • The research must be done during the Summer.
    • It is expected that the research be your focus over the summer; not course work. For that reason, students taking classes will not be eligible for living expenses and eligible for a maximum award of $1,000* (see Funding details below).
  • ONLY NC State University active/registered* undergraduates may apply. (*The student should be registered for Fall courses at the time the grant is processed for payment in May/June)
    • If you graduate in May prior to the next summer semester, you are not eligible for grant funding for the Summer
  • Students must submit proposals online.
    • During that process, students will upload their proposal form and provide budget information online
    • Awards will be given to both single student and team proposals.
      • If a team submits a proposal, a team leader should be selected to register and submit the proposal using the team proposal and team budget forms.
  • If you are working with humans – YOU MUST APPLY FOR UNIVERSITY IRB APPROVAL! (even if you are just doing surveys!)
  • If you are working with vertebrate animals – YOUR PROJECT MUST HAVE IACUC APPROVAL!
  • Students who receive awards are expected to participate in a future NC State Undergraduate Research Symposium such as the annual summer undergraduate research symposium; see Present Your Research.
    • These awards do not cover stipends/salaries, nor stipends/salaries to participants of research survey’s or studies.
    • Summer awards will be paid directly to student(s). The OUR will not transfer summer awards to faculty mentor University accounts. Please read over the Undergraduate Research Award Disbursement
    • OUR Awards are available to students for supplies and materials for students who are taking summer courses at a lower maximum level of $1,000.
      • We are not able to support the costs of living expenses if you are enrolled in classes. This is in line with our awards that we offer during the academic year. If you plan to attend classes over the summer while conducting research, you will be eligible for a reduced award for materials and supplies only. The OUR will verify enrollment status prior to award decisions.
    • Up to $2,000 OUR UGR Awards available for students not taking summer courses (living expenses plus materials and supplies).
      • Funding can include support for living expenses (rent, meals) during the summer while conducting research so long as you are not enrolled in classes during the summer semesters. You may put housing and food costs on your budget if you are not attending summer classes.
    • Travel: These research awards may be used to cover travel related to conducting research, such as mileage to and from research site to collect samples or visiting libraries, museums or archives. Travel related expenses should be only be a part of the budget submitted for an award and not the whole budget.
      • Research awards do not cover travel to present research. Students seeking funding for travel to present research should apply for the OUR Travel Awards
      • Some study abroad expenses are covered by these awards. Please contact our office prior to applying if you have questions about study abroad exceptions.
    • By virtue of the funds being used for the award, these payments will not be reported to the recipients on a 1099 or W-2.  This does not mean these payments are not taxable, it simply means the university does not have a reporting or withholding requirement.  In most cases, the IRS will consider these “non qualified scholarship” payments which are taxable according to the IRS.  Payment recipients should refer to IRS Publication 970,, and the Form 1040 instructions, For further information on what amount is reportable and how to report it when filing their tax return, students should contact a tax professional.

General Information:

  • Call for proposals typically opens in February and closes in Late Feb/March.
  • NC State students may also, in addition to presenting at NC State, present at the State of NC Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium (SNCURCS) in November each year, NCUR in April and/or, present at a national discipline conference, and/or publish in a professional journal.
  • Students will typically be notified concerning funding in May.
  • If you receive a Fall and Spring or Spring only award, you ARE eligible to apply for additional funding during the summer.
